ELEMENTARY Objectives The course is designed for participants who have no knowledge or a limited knowledge of the French language. The goal is to enable the learner to hold a conversation at either an informal or familiar language register. It will also guide the participant to recognise, imitate and use the natural intonations, rhythms and basic structures of the spoken language spontaneously. Participants will also be able to describe a place, as well as physical and spatial relationships between people or people and things. Participants will acquire basic lexical and syntactic structures limited to topics of general interest using simple conversational and narrative styles. Methodology Participants will develop their oral comprehension and oral expression through the use of an audio-visual method. Learning is reinforced with complementary language laboratory work, communication exercises and sociocultural activities carried out in French. Course Content

INTERMEDIATE Objectives The course is designed for individuals who have attained a certain level of fluency and need to improve the accuracy of their spoken language. The goal is to make the participant use linguistic nuances and accurately situate events in time when conversing. Participants will be able to understand opinions expressed by others and voice their own. At this stage, students understand not only what is said, but also what is implied. There is a broadening of abstract vocabulary to express emotions and opinions; an introduction of verb tenses beyond those used to express time concepts such as the ability to use the subjunctive to express obligation, desire, doubt, and emotion. Students progressing at this level have a varied language and use lexical and structural options to express ideas in a variety of ways; their language is more nuanced, without the ability to use a particular language register. Methodology At this level, there is a progressive withdrawal of visual aids in the classroom. Participants are required to create their own mental imagery based on the spoken word only. French language sociocultural activities help the learning process along with classroom exposure to authentic cultural materials, such as videos, songs, and texts. Course content
